'wasted'  is een architectonische installatie van 12.000 witte, zijden jurken waar het publiek doorheen kan wandelen. De fysieke en publieke ervaring kan men internaliseren door te participeren aan het project. 

Elke vrouwelijke bezoeker kan gratis een jurk mee naar huis nemen op twee voorwaarden: zij draagt de jurk gedurende ‘de tijd van de maand’ en verwerkt haar ervaringen over haar eigen lichaam en vrouwelijkheid in een eigen artistiek statement en stuurt dat terug naar Tomoko Mukaiyama. Dat kan in de vorm van tekst, foto, video, sound of objecten. 

Tomoko Mukaiyama verwerkt deze statements in een monumentaal concert van de ‘Goldberg Variationen’ van J.S. Bach. Met het multimediale concert opent Tomoko Mukaiyama elk van de zes exposities en doet hiermee verslag van hoe deze vrouwen over hun eigen lichamelijkheid denken en voelen.

‘wasted’ is een organisch groeiend kunstproject vol ervaringen en confrontaties, maar is bovenal een esthetische beleving. De witte zijden jurken laten letterlijk hun spoor achter over de hele wereld, terwijl tegelijkertijd de immateriële waarde stijgt door elke ervaring die verwerkt wordt in het pianoconcert. Na de wereldpremière in Japan reist ‘wasted’ naar Jogjakarta, waar het geëxposeerd wordt in het Cemeti Art House in december. In maart 2010 presenteert het Schunck-Glaspaleis de Nederlandse première. Daarna reist het project door naar Praag, Brussel en Moskou.

“Als kunstenaar maak ik in klank en beeld contact met mijn publiek. Waar liggen de grenzen van het eigen lichaam en waar begint de waarneming van het lichaam van iemand anders? De ruimte daartussen bestaat uit levendige energie die mijn publiek en ikzelf ervaren tijdens mijn performances. Het meest tastbare instrument om die energie op te slaan, te meten, te bediscussiëren en te laten ervaren is ‘Het Lichaam’. Om het lichaam in werking te krijgen, moet het publiek persoonlijk worden aangesproken, zich willen engageren en open staan voor discussies en ervaringen. Met wasted wil ik als het ware mijn lichaam verlengen; de lijnen die tussen mensen lopen, blootleggen en verbinden. En mensen zelfs aanzetten om zelf te creëren.” - Tomoko Mukaiyama

‘wasted’ is an international art project combining visual art, architecture and music.
Every discipline fuels the other and you could be the engine.

‘wasted’ is an art project built upon the oldest fertility rite: the female menstruation period. The emotions around this notice of fertility are ancient and created many different cultural habits and customs all over the world. In many cultures it is hidden and even considered a taboo. At the same time it is the everlasting, most powerful and most common phenomenon that is happening to a female body. In fact it is the reason why you are here on planet earth.
Rites are thoroughly created by men to worship, celebrate or to expel a bigger entity behind the common things in life. The human body is an important instrument in these rites and in many cases even the subject. ‘wasted’ is a visual and musical journey connecting different people and places through a celebration of the 21st century human body.

Imagine yourself entering a white universe of thousands of white silk dresses. You will be steered to find your way through a gigantic labyrinth of silk walls that is almost like your second skin. And somewhere inside you will enter the core of the human body.

wasted ritual
Every female visitor is invited to participate in the wasted project. At the end of the installation you can receive a ‘free’ dress in the size S, M or L to take home. The condition to take one of these beautiful silk dresses is to engage yourself to the ritual experience of wearing the dress during your ‘time of the month’. By thinking consciously of this bodily ritual and performing it, just like Tomoko Mukaiyama did, we invite you to put this experience into your own art statement. You are free to use words, visuals, video, sound, movement or any combination of these. Once you have completed your statement, we kindly request you to send it back to Tomoko Mukaiyama. Your contribution amongst hundreds and possibly thousands of statements will be merged into a music piece and presented in a multi media concert for a live audience.

‘wasted’ leaves a trace of white dresses on the world map. The dresses decrease in number, which means at the same time all mental and creative processes will increase. Tomoko Mukaiyama uses the artistic statements made by you and hundreds of other women worldwide for a contemporary performance of the famous ‘Goldberg Variationen’ by Johann Sebastian Bach. The exhibition of dresses at each venue will be festively opened by this multimedia concert using sound, video, spoken word and more.
