Waiting Forbidden vertelt over het gevoel van ontheemding, angst en verzet. Over mensen met een Palestijnse identiteit of een Palestijnse afkomst. Mensen die zich altijd moeten verhouden tot onderdrukking, nooit neutraal kunnen zijn. Waar niets onschuldig lijkt en de tijd slechts voortschrijdt als teken van vooruitgang… De voorstelling is geïnspireerd op verhalen van de dansers en het werk van Mona Hatoum, een bekend beeldend kunstenaar van Palestijnse afkomst. ‘Home’ is in haar werk een mythische locatie: een plaats omgeven door verlies en geweld. Waiting Forbidden werd in Amman gemaakt door de Nederlandse choreografen Feri de Geus en Noortje Bijvoets van het gezelschap Le Grand Cru in samenwerking met dansers uit Jordanië, de bezette Palestijnse Gebieden en Nederland. De voorstelling is in het reguliere avondprogramma van Dancing on the Edge te zien, maar wordt ook in verschillende steden opgevoerd binnen het educatieve programma (zie www.1001bytes.org). Na afloop van elke voorstelling is er ruimte voor een nagesprek met de dansers en performers. (Duur: 45 min.)

Le Grand Cru Feri de Geus en Noortje Bijvoets van Le Grand Cru zijn gerenommeerde choreografen binnen de Nederlandse moderne danscultuur. Sinds 2000 werken zij intensief samen met choreografen en dansers over de hele wereld. Door uitwisselingen, workshops en masterclasses enerzijds en professionele interculturele producties anderzijds verbindt Le Grand Cru eigentijds danstheater aan cultuurgebonden dansvormen. Het werk van Le Grand Cru wordt dan ook vaak omschreven als een unieke smeltkroes van moderne dans met traditionele dans uit wereldculturen. Schijnbaar moeiteloos verbinden en visualiseren zij authentieke cultuurbepaalde inhoud aan hun eigen artistieke zeggingskracht.

Waiting Forbidden is about a sense of displacement, fear and resistance – a production about being Palestinian and being of Palestinian descent. These are people connecting and struggling with their own relationship to oppression and statelessness- a mental labyrinth of sixty years of violence in a place where nothing seems innocent any more, and where time is moving forward. At least time moves forward…. The performance is inspired by the stories of the dancers and the work of Mona Hatoum, a well-known visual artist of Palestinian descent. In her work, home is a mythical location; a place charged with loss and violence.

Foundation Le Grand Cru makes dance training programmes and performances with partners all over the world. The artistic directors, established choreographers Noortje Bijvoets and Feri de Geus, have become specialists in working with dancers in a culturally defined setting. A wealth of experience in a myriad of countries enables them to translate the strength of a cultural context into contemporary artistic work.
