Grand Theatre Producties Mozgó Ház De tragedie van de mens (co-productie met Berliner Festspiele e.a.)  'De tragedie van de mens' (Az ember tragédiája) van Imre Madách geldt als Hongaarse 'Faust' en tevens als het laatste grote werk van het Hongaarse classicisme. Het stuk presenteert een kleidoscopische geschiedenis van de mensheid. Adam en Eva observeren, onder begeleiding van Lucifer, een aantal cruciale momenten in deze geschiedenis en zien in feite een aaneenschakeling van holle ideeën en een steeds grotere verfijning van vernietigingsmethodes. Het zijn vooral de gevangenissen die steeds geraffineerder worden.Deze nieuwe voorstelling van de Hongaarse theatergroep Mozgó Ház werd gemaakt in opdracht van de Berliner Festspiele 1999 waar het afgelopen september in premičre ging. De groep was eerder in het Grand Theatre te zien met de vorige productie: De Kersentuin, een sfeervolle voorstelling vol visueel vernuft. Ook in de nieuwe voorstelling is veel te zien. Een Duitse recensent betuigde zijn spijt dat hij niet beschikte over drie paar ogen om alle beelden en associaties in zich op te kunnen nemen. In de pers tuimelen termen als 'exzellent' en 'herausragend' over elkaar. 'De tragedie van de mens' is een coproductie van Mozgó Ház met o.a. het Grand Theatre. De voorstelling wordt gespeeld met een Engelse boventiteling. Süddeutsche Zeitung English Mozgó Ház The tragedy of Man 'The tragedy of Man' is the last great work of Hungarian national classicism. What came after it can be likened to a plane after landing, as it continues to run in order to discard its spent force. In form and subject the play relies on the formula of a dramatic poem and of historical philosophical literature. In european literature, the former grew out of Goethe's Faust, while the latter sprang from Goethe's neighbour, from Herder. But these works were not written for reading but for commentary - like prayer books and mystical texts. It is said that the dramatic poem acts as a solace for pets, in that they could not be philosophers, just as aesthetics is solace for philosophers, in that they could not be poets. "Madách's figures are not so much true, active participants in historical conflicts but travellers through certain historical scenes. The conflicts that arise never bring out the essence of ther being (..), but are merely clashes with the spectator and commentator .." so György Lukács worte about the Tragedy. The great philosopher defined precisely the questions which also preoccupy us: how can a play whose anti-dramatic stance is theatrical, but cannot be fully entered into, be performed? How can it be performed by actors when they cannot manifest themselves in their roles? Madách's drama is a kaleidoscopic history of the state, in which Adam and Eve observe the significant stages in the history of humankind and live to see a succession of hollow ideas. The transcendent human pair, with Lucifer as their guide, take part in events as idealistic tourists. The performance by Mozgó Ház constitutes a series of virtual documents based on their journey.
