Grand Theatre Producties Meira Asher Spears into Hooks - the performance (co-productie met Sophiensaele, Berlijn) Let wel: dit is exorcisme, een uitstalkast van kwaadwillende krachten, een samenzwering van spoken uit de recente en de lopende geschiedenis. Het album 'Spear into Hooks' is een elecronische opera. Geen lekkere melodietjes of grooves, geen geruststellende geluiden om je de illusie van sereniteit te geven, geen fun, geen escapisme.  'Spears into Hooks' is een intense performance, met als uitgangspunt de nieuwe cd van de Isralische muzikante/performer Meira Asher. Ondersteund door straffe videobeelden en innovatieve vormen van geluidstechniek creëert ze dramatische beelden die direct tot het onderbewustzijn spreken en de verbale kant van de boodschap versterken. De cd verschijnt bij Crammed Discs.De performance is helemaal gewijd aan de sociaal-politieke crisis in Israel en Palestina. Asher gebruikt deze crisis als een model voor de etnische, religieuze en geopolitieke conflicten zoals ze in de hele geschiedenis en over de hele wereld plaatsvonden en plaatsvinden. Het echte wederzijdse begrip zal te voorschijn komen als de nachtmerries die aan beide kanten rondspoken in de collectieve herinnering, onbarmhartig getoond en verwerkt worden. Dit project is een alarmbel. Het portretteert het individu als een slachtoffer van een immer voortdurende, grove en verslavende werkelijkheid die chronische ziekten voortbrengt die iedereen besmetten: lafheid en apathie. "Alle speren tot haken omgebogen voor de beesten die we zijn geworden, om opgehangen te worden in onze traditionele slachthuizen," een op de wereld van vandaag toegesneden herziening van de Bijbelse woorden uit de boeken Jesaja en Micha: "En ze zullen hun zwaarden omsmeden tot ploegscharen en hun speren tot snoeimessen: een land zal zijn zwaard niet opheffen tegen een ander land, noch zullen zij nog langer oorlog leren." In 1997 presenteerde Meira Asher haar debuutalbum 'Dissected' waarmee ze zich meteen manifesteerde als een emblematisch figuur die de standvastige, politiek bewuste en vredezoekende generatie van Israelische muzikanten vertegenwoordigt, die buiten dat land nog veel te weinig worden gehoord. Het nieuwe album 'Spears into Hooks' zal als een grote verrassing komen voor degenen die haar eerdere, vooral acoustische, percussiemuziek kennen. Terwijl haar ervaring als zangeres, slagwerkster en specialist in traditionele West-Afrikaanse en Indiase muziek altijd een basis zal blijven, heeft Meira Asher zich inmiddels een aantal compositietechnieken meester gemaakt die vooral in de electronische muziek (zowel de 'serieuze' als de meer dans-georiënteerde varianten) gebruikt worden. English Meira Asher Spears into Hooks - the performance Behold: this is an exorcism, an exposition of malevolent forces, a conjuration of ghosts from recent and current history. This album is an electronic opera. No nice melodies or easy-going grooves to hang on to, no soothing sounds to lull you into an illusion of serenity, no fun, no escapism. Based on Meira Asher's new album, released bij Crammed Discs, this is an intensive event where numerous layers of textures and innovative bold sound-processing are used to create dramatic images which speak directly to the subconscious and reinforce the more verbal aspect of the message. 'All spears bent into Hooks for the animals we become, to be hung in our traditional slaughter houses", a realistic distortion of the biblical phrase which appears both in the book of Isaiah and Micha: "and they shall beat ther swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more". This performance is entirely devoted to the socio-political crisis in israel/Palestine, taken as a model for the ethnic/religious/geopolitical conflicts around the globe and throughout history. The real mutual understanding will appear if all the nightmares that haunt the collective minds of both people are mercilessly exposed and dealt with. this project is a warning alarm. It portrays the individual as a victim of a repetitive, brutal and addictive reality which generates chronical diseases that settle in everyone: cowardice and apathy. Her debut album 'Dissected' has positioned Meira Asher as a deeply original new artist. Press and public alike have welcomed her both as an important singer/musician and as an emblematic figure which represents an uncompromising, politically-aware, peace-seeking generation of Israeli musicians, whose voice is all too rarely heard abroad. Meira Ahser's new album 'Spears into Hooks' will come as a shock to those who got to know her in her previous, mostly acoustic and percussive musical incarnation. While her experience as a singer, drummer, and specialist of West African and Indian traditional music will always remain the foundation on which she has built her identity, Meira has been studying and mastering a number of sophisticated, cutting edge composition techniques which are currently used in electronic music (in both senses of the term: 'serious' as well as dance-derived varieties of electronica), and has harnessed them to her unique musical vision. 'Spears into Hooks' presents itself in the shape of an electronic opera, which will appeal simultaneously to the young fan of The Aphex Twin and to the more mature admirer of Penderecki. there exists no musical category to describe the music on this album. A free association test performed on a panel of initial (and initiated) listeners has shown a recurrence of the following words, in no particular order: Industrial Drill'n'Bass, Captain Beefheart, Autechre, Public Image Limited, Harder Faster Louder, Kurt Weill, Avant-Rock meets Electro Dub Infection, Ligeti, R'n'N (Rhyme and Noise), German expressionism, Bulgarian mourning ceremonies ... More seriously: the sound of 'Spears into Hooks' is absolutely unique, and it will hit you hard in the stomach. The album is released in February 1999, and is followed by a tour that starts at the 6th of March in the Grand Theatre in Groningen.
