Een geliefde, zeventig jaar geleden in de storm der tijden kwijtgeraakt. De geluiden van het bos. Het scheermes van oom Max. De lange treinreis naar een ander land.



‘Heimwee is als golven in de zee: dan zijn ze hoog, dan zijn ze laag. Maar heimwee heb ik altijd gehad. Naar de dierbaren zolang ze er waren, naar de natuur, de cultuur waarin je bent opgegroeid. Naar de plekjes waar je op blote voeten liep, waar je precies wist hoe het mos aanvoelde.’

De levensverhalen van oude mensen uit heel Europa zijn de bron van Hidden Trees. Voor de camera vertellen zij over liefde, dood, geweld en verzoening. En over de kleine dingen, al haast in de vergetelheid getuimeld. Het toen, het nu en wat intussen kwam vervlochten in een nieuw verhaal. Met moderne dans, (live) muziek en film. Betsy Torenbos, theatermaker en choreografe, realiseert sinds 1998 op verschillende plekken in de wereld theatervoorstellingen gebaseerd op oral history. Eerdere edities vonden plaats in Macedonië, Osaka, Cyprus, Rome, Salzburg, Turkije/Oost-Groningen, Drenthe en Katwijk aan Zee.

'Hidden Trees' is a project in search of forgotten memories of the oldest generations. This project can be seen as the beginning of a family tree. Throughout the years the 'tree' develops into a large collection of highly personal stories which breathe the different cultures. Stories are sought with universal themes as revenge and love, evil and reconciliation; mysteries of survival. Personal stories told by the oldest generation of people. We search in desolated places or in the country side. We search in the cities also, as cities can be a desert. For centuries storytelling was the primary way through which culture (in the widest sense of its meaning) was passed through on to other generations. We recall and remember a way of living and being together with the use of 'oral history' in this work.

Betsy Torenbos is a dancer, choreographer, theatremaker and visual artist. Foundation Be-wonder creats multidisciplinairy and multicultural projects in the arts. Theatre- dance performances - short films - interviews (oral history) - installations - DVD's - workshops (dance improvisation)
