Galina Borissova

Ataraxia

The Bulgarian choreographer Galina Borissova was the winner of the International Choreographer Concours in Groningen in 1998. She is now invited by the Grand Theatre to come and make a new piece with dancers from Bulgaria and The Netherlands.
Ataraxia is, in the words of Galina, a project which is dedicated to any exquisite temptation, that we had not couraged to yield to.

"What is common between memory and the art - taste for details. The memory contains namely details, not the whole picture. For example I remember certain cases from my life, not important ones, but attractive ones.
I wanted to do something that we could talk about after dinner.
There is a great pleasure in working with a group.
The collision between different approaches and ideas. The result is impure and hybrid. But I'm attracted to opponents. I was looking for contrast between details and global constants, between an individual and society, between pleasant and unpleasant, between good and bad, between characters.
I wanted to return to something finer and richer, and for seasonable diversion I reduced to a few questionable sources - facts, philosopy and imagination.
According to the ancient Greek ethics 'ataraxia' symbolized condition of spiritual calmness, placidness and conciliation with reality. It is a characteristic, describing imperturbability, integral harmony and achievement of sacred calmness. Ataraxia is living without suffering pain, in a beautiful world, where the happiness is the absence of troubles."
