De Drie Dagen (The Three Days) is a new Groningen music festival. It will comprise an exciting three day musical journey which will range from Anouar Brahem's Tunisian chamber jazz and the Balkan fanfare sounds of Matt Darriau and the Groningen Jongens Driest to the noise jazz of the New York power trio TYFT. On the way we'll be meeting two big shots from Berlin: Alexander von Schlippenbach and David Moss. Musical adventurers will have to be in Groningen's Oosterpoort and the Grand Theatre for three days in May for an adventurous update on the international jazz and improv scene.
Anouar Brahem - ud
Jean-Louis Matinier - accordion
François Couturier – piano
Tunisian lute player Anouar Brahem masters the art of bringing together various musical corners of the world. His roots are in Arabian classical music, but he is also fascinated by genres like flamenco and chanson – he is a great fan of the work of Jacques Brel. In Arabian music the ud (the lute) has the role of accompanying singers, and doing short improvisations in between the sung passages. These short intermezzi were the starting point for Brahem's intimate form of chamber jazz. Accordionist Jean-Louis Matinier is well-known in Groningen. In the early years of the Les Trois Jours festival (Drie Dagen's forerunner) he made quite an impression with the French group Le Bûcher des Silences and the Riessler/Matinier/Rizzo trio. Brahem has been making a series of albums for the ECM label, of which Le Voyage de Sahar is the latest. 'Thoughtful and spiritual.' (De Standaard)
A session featuring a pool of musicians from groups led by Behsat Uvez, Floris Vermeulen, Arno Bakker and Gerard Ammerlaan.
Featuring:
Janfie van Strien - saxophones
Joop van der Linden - trombone
Arno Bakker - sousaphone
Floris Vermeulen – bass guitar
Harry Arling – drums
Daniele D’Agaro – clarinet, tenor sax
Alexander von Schlippenbach – piano
Pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach (1938) is the nestor of modern jazz in Berlin. In 1996 he got the idea to arrange Thelonious Monk's total oeuvre (70 compositions) for a live concert. This became Monk's Casino: a total of three and a half hours of music. It was an instant hit. Von Schlippenbach has a preference for the duet format. For the FMP label he made recordings of duos with Sam Rivers, Sunny Murray, Tony Oxley and with Aki Takase (his wife). His most recent duo partner is Daniele D'Agaro. This highly original clarinettist and passionate tenor saxophonist is well known in the Netherlands. D’Agaro played with Sean Bergin (in his MOB and in Trio San Francisco), presents his own formations Lingua Franca and Adriatics Orchestra and works with Mark Helias, Jim Black and Han Bennink. Recently Von Schlippenbach and D’Agaro recorded the CD Dedalus for the Italian artesuono label. It features a great deal of Monk material as well as inventive improvisations. A stunning duo.
David Moss - voice, electronics
Hannes Strobl - bass
Hanno Leichtmann - drums, electronics
David Moss is an extraordinary vocalist and percussionist who has been operating from Berlin since 1991. In the early '80s he started as a drummer in the New York downtown scene, where he worked with Tom Cora, John Zorn, Eugene Chadbourne, John Lurie, Fred Frith, Arto Lindsay and Christian Marclay. He wanted to extend his range as a percussionist , and ended up using his voice, developing a unique vocal collage technique. Nowadays David Moss is highly in demand as a vocalist in prestigious operas by Heiner Goebbels and others. In New York Moss ran his own Denseband. In Berlin he has now started Denseland, featuring two members of the German electronic music scene: Hannes Strobl and Hanno Leichtmann, formerly known as the illustrious drum ‘n’ bass duo Paloma. And David Moss of course still growls, pants, screams, laughs and sings like no other.
Andrew d'Angelo – alto sax, bass clarinet
Hilmar Jensson - guitar
Jim Black – drums, electronics
The Icelandic guitarist Hilmar Jensson came to New York by way of Boston in the nineties. In 2002 he formed the electric power trio TYFT with saxophonist Andrew d'Angelo and drummer Jim Black. It explores the darker regions of noise, punk and free jazz with a great deal of fervour. TYFT's music ranges from energy rock to mysterious soundscapes. Drummer Jim Black provides his very own brand of rhythmically complex jazzy feel. Hilmar Jensson’s TYFT fits the list of adventurous New York bands like Jim Black’s Alas No Axis, Chris Speed’s Yeah No or Pachora, but TYFT rocks harder. The powerful trio seems to take over where Elliott Sharp's cult band The Semantics (featuring Ned Rothenberg en Samm Bennett) left off in the eighties.
Matt Darriau - clarinet, alto sax
Janfie van Strien – soprano and tenor sax
Joop van der Linden - trombone
Arno Bakker – sousaphone
Michael Vatcher – drums
De Jongens Driest are on their way up – fast. This satellite of the Amsterdam Klezmerband is very successful abroad as well. For De Drie Dagen they host two Americans: klezmer specialist Matt Darriau and drummer Michael Vatcher. New York clarinettist and alto saxophonist Darriau is best known for his lengthy association with the Klezmatics, one of the originators of the American klezmer revival. In addition Darriau leads his four piece Paradox Trio, which draws from a broader scope of Balkan music. Percussionist Michael Vatcher grew up in California, but has been living in Amsterdam for the past thirty years, and plays a key role in the Dutch improv scene. Vatcher plays in many groups featuring Michael Moore (Available Jelly), and Luc Ex (Roof, 4Walls). Together with the Driest guys we may expect a swinging steam train full of jazzy Balkan, Caribbean and African tunes, but one thing is for sure: it will be a very exuberant ending to De Drie Dagen.
